What Is The Difference Between Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui?

Vastu Shastra is a very big deal even to this date in India. As luxury interior designers in Mumbai, we often get asked the best practices for Vastu at home. A lot of times, we also get asked the difference between Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui.

In the area of interior designing, Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui are highly known amongst the community. They are often confused as the same thing, however, the nuances of both the concepts are different in many ways.

Here’s a brief look at both their differences and similarities to help you understand.

Vastu Shastra originated from India almost 8000 years ago. ‘Vastu’ means home or dwelling and ‘Shastra’ means science. The purpose was created to help build temples.

Feng Shui originated in China, much later than Vastu Shastra, almost 4-5000 years ago. It is believed that some of its principles are derived from Vastu Shastra, however, that is yet to be confirmed. The purpose of Feng Shui’s birth was to help choose the best burial areas for Kings and ward off negative energy from home.

Both the disciples share some fairly common concepts. Their practices are based around powerful cosmic energies that help improve positivity at home. Their philosophies are based on life, Feng Shui focuses on Chi (Vital life) and Vastu Shastra focuses on Prana (life).

Both philosophies believe that the centre of the home is the focal point for energy flow. By combining the best elements strategically, one can make the flow of energies positive. Both the disciplines use an eight direction compass to determine the best architectural placements along with 5 elements for balance.

Then What’s The Difference?

The differences between Feng Shui and Vastu Shastra are various. The latter focuses on the science of living the best way possible while the former considers the best geographical locations for the flow of positive energy. Here’s a simplified understanding of both.

Which One Should I Opt For?

Vastu Shastra focuses on buildings created from scratch while Feng Shui focuses on arranging existing elements to help the flow of energy. Both practices are used across the globe by architects and interior designers on a large scale.

So which should you opt for? Well, it all boils down to your beliefs. The agenda of both the practices is the same: to help you live life in the best way possible. If you are planning to build a home from scratch, then Vastu is the best possible option to get started. However, if you are looking to transform an existing home, then Feng Shui can help you arrange the flow of energy better.
